CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Chagrin Falls High School jumped from 5 to 2 in this year’s U.S. News & World Report Greater Cleveland high school rankings, shuffling the top of the list that also includes perennial top finishers, such as Solon and Rocky River.
The high schools at the top of the list for the Cleveland-Elyria metropolitan area largely remain the same -- suburban school districts with higher median household incomes.
John Hay School of Science and Medicine and John Hay Early College High School, ranked 9 and 10 respectively for 2020, are exceptions, with 100% economic disadvantage rates. These two high schools are selective-admission schools within the Cleveland Metropolitan School District.
The rankings were announced the day after Gov. Mike DeWine announced that K-12 schools would be remain closed through the end of the school year. Students are learning remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic.
There is no decision yet on how schools will resume in the fall.
U.S. News & World Report, an online consumer magazine known for its rankings of educational institutions, did not fundamentally change its criteria for ranking thousands of high schools this year. In 2019, the criteria changed so drastically that the publication does not view the 2019 and 2020 rankings comparable to the annual lists published before.
The six factors used in ranking the schools are:
-- College readiness (30%): percentage of seniors that took at least one Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate exam and the percentage who passed.
-- College curriculum breadth (10%): percentage of seniors who took a “a wide variety” of AP and IB courses across multiple disciplines and those who passed.
-- College reading and math proficiency (20%): how well students did on state reading and math assessments.
-- Reading and math performance (20%): how well students did on state reading and math assessments compared to what the publication predicted based on modeling.
-- Underserved student performance (10 percent): how well students receiving subsidized school lunch, and black and Hispanic populations perform on state assessments relative to statewide performance among students not in those subgroups.
-- Graduation rate (10 percent): rates are for the 2018 graduation cohort.
